Course outline
Unit 1: Analyzing Measurement System Variation
- Lesson 1 - Variation
Reviews sources of measurement system variation, explains Type A and Type B evaluations of measurement uncertainty, and explores the effects of too much measurement variation.
- Lesson 2 - Measurement system linearity
Looks at how to measure linearity, both graphically and mathematically, to determine if a gage or instrument has linearity problems. Includes how to deal with linearity problems.
- Lesson 3 - Measurement system stability
Includes how to evaluate gage stability using a control chart and how to deal with stability problems.
- Lesson 4 - Repeatability and reproducibility
Explains how to conduct a gage repeatability and reproducibility study, includes R&R analysis for destructive, non-destructive, and attribute measurements. Includes use of ANOVA for gage R&R.
- Lesson 5 - Improving measurement systems
Uses problem-solving to find the root causes of R&R problems. Includes using gage R&R data to direct the problem-solving effort. Describes basic causes to investigate if gage repeatability or appraiser reproducibility is high.
- Lesson 6 - MSA Software considerations
Suggests selection criteria of software features for gage R&R studies. Includes advanced MSA tools.

Unit 2: Managing Measurement Systems
- Lesson 1 - Formalizing management
Teaches why gage calibration is important and makes good business sense. Includes why a gage or instrument may not be accurate and the components of a gage management system.
- Lesson 2 - Sources of measurement error
Looks at measurement errors due to gage calibration deficiencies, use, or damage. Also, judgment errors that cause measurement errors, gage R&R issues, and measurement error.
- Lesson 3 - Calibration practices
Discusses common calibration practices. Includes key elements of a calibration system as defined by ISO 10012-1, gage identification techniques, sources for calibration procedures and independent calibration laboratories. Also, looks at methods for determining intervals of calibration.
- Lesson 4 - Calibration standards and tools
Explores traceability of calibration standards from primary national standards to working standards. Includes the role of transfer standards and working standards, measurement uncertainty, and the calibration system.
- Lesson 5 - Calibration pitfalls
Includes common measurement equipment management system pitfalls and proactive techniques to steer your organization clear of these pitfalls.
- Lesson 6 - Records and audits
Discusses different types of records needed for a comprehensive gage management system. Also, looks at the role of audits and the components of a corrective action plan to address areas of noncompliance.
- Lesson 7 - Calibration software considerations
Suggests selection criteria for gage management software and looks at the benefits of using gage management software.
