What are the tools for SPC analysis?

SPC can be applied to any process where output can be measured. SPC tools are applied to data from a process for statistical analysis to help make informed decisions. Six primary SPC tools can be used for data analysis:

  1. Run Chart
A run chart is a tool used to interpret data from a system or process by graphing it over time.

  2. Control Chart
This SPC chart also depicts time ordered data. It takes the run chart a step further with the addition of a line depicting the overall average of the data and control limits that reflect the expected variation in the data. Types of control charts include X-bar Range, X-bar Moving Range, np control chart, p control chart, c control chart, and u control chart.

  3. Histogram
A histogram is a bar chart of raw data where the bars represent the frequency with which each number occurs. Statistical calculations can be made to show information about the data such as central location, width of spread, and shape.
  1. Capability Analysis
Capability analysis is a set of SPC calculations used to assess whether a system is statistically able to meet a set of specifications or requirements.

  2. Pareto Chart
A Pareto chart is a bar chart that displays related measures in decreasing order of occurrence. The purpose is to separate the significant few from the trivial many when conducting SPC analysis. Pareto charts can display costs or counts, depending on what you want to learn.

  3. Scatter Diagram
A scatter diagram is a type of SPC chart that evaluates the relationship between two factors. One factor is plotted on the horizontal axis and the other on the vertical axis. The pattern formed by the values on the chart indicates whether a relationship exists and the strength of the relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is statistical process control (SPC)?Statistical process control (SPC) is the practice of using statistical techniques such as control charts and capability analysis to monitor and control a process.

Variation can occur at any time in manufacturing processes, making it difficult to predict issues. This variation can result in excessive waste, lost labor hours, rework, and scrap, all which contribute to increased production costs.

Processes are under statistical control when all special causes of variation have been eliminated and only natural or common variation causes remain. Statistical control can be illustrated on a control chart by observing data collection that falls within control limits, and by observing the absence of non-random patterns or trends.

The importance of statistical control is that it shows what the process is capable of producing over time. Statistical process control allows you to make predictions about how the process will run in the future based on how it ran in the past. This helps you see if the process is capable of producing output that meets specifications.

What is statistical process control (SPC) software?Statistical process control software provides an ongoing statistical analysis of data collection using control charts, histograms, and process capability analysis. Whether on-premise or cloud-based, SPC software analyzes and interprets data so that areas of process improvement are identified.

SPC software can help identify the origin of a problem and demonstrate whether or not an improvement is effective. Using a cloud-based or on-premise deployment of SPC software can help identify process variation causes, determine process stability and capability, predict process outcomes, and plan for the future.

SPC software provides the capability to monitor and analyze data in order to reduce variation in a production process or other system. It uses statistical methods, which provide insight and accuracy into manufacturing processes or any process that can be measured over time.

Statistical Process Control deals with the science of analyzing data output of a specific process within a desired range and is commonly used for mass production. Statistical process control software is critical to managing a process. SPC software facilitates real-time data analysis, allowing manufacturers to keep operations running, meet customer requirements, minimize waste, maximize profits, and ensure quality.

SPC software generates control charts to assess whether or not your process is stable and performs capability analysis to determine at what level your process is capable of producing output within specification limits.

PQ Systems provides intuitive training for optimal SPC software use to help organizations implement SPC software solutions for real-time statistical process control.

Real-time SPC is the use of SPC charts and analysis during the time of production for immediate process feedback. Today’s supply chain and manufacturing processes depend on a combination of machinery and automation technology to produce products more efficiently. Real-time SPC programs allow operations to continuously improve quality control within manufacturing processes.

Real-time SPC software can significantly enhance manufacturing quality initiatives. When manufacturing capacity increases, quality management software is needed to provide visibility into the supply chain and help shrink the overall cost-of-quality.

Real-time SPC software processes data in real time as it is collected, providing operators with management tools to prevent and catch defects before they leave the manufacturing floor. Real-time SPC software allows manufacturers to understand which processes are statistically out of control.

Choosing SQCpack from PQ Systems as your real-time SPC software provides a variety of benefits including:

  • Cost reduction
  • Reduced variability
  • Process capability
  • Integration with data collection systems
  • Waste reduction
  • Decisions driven by data
