GP: Converting GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) data to GAGEpack 5.5

Revision Date: 2005-09-01

Problem:

There have been several upgrades to GAGEpack since the 2.0 (DOS) version was released in the 1995 to 1996 timeframe. With each upgrade, GAGEpack data has been converted along with the software. If you continued to use the DOS version of GAGEpack through several upgrades and you have now decided to begin using GAGEpack (5.5 or higher), you must take a few extra steps to convert your data. Additionally, GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) data that is still in use today (2003) is often corrupt for one reason or another. This may cause errors while running the DOS GAGEpack and it may cause additional problems during the conversion to 5.5.

Solution:

Here are the general steps you will take to convert GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) data to GAGEpack 5.5 (Windows):

1)      Install GAGEpack 4.0 (Windows)

2)      Convert your GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) data to GAGEpack 4.0 (Windows)

3)      Uninstall GAGEpack 4.0 (Windows)

4)      Install your new GAGEpack 5.5 or higher

5)      Convert the GAGEpack 4.0 data (from step 2) into the new GAGEpack 5.5 format.

If you get errors in step #2 or if you have been getting errors while using GAGEpack 2.0, you may have a corrupt GAGEpack 2.0 database. This will have to be corrected before the data can be converted to GAGEpack 5.5.

GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) data is stored in Paradox (version 4.0) data files. One way to fix a corrupt Paradox data file is to use a program named TUTILITY.EXE. This program is available on the PQ Systems Quality Suite CD under the \Support folder. Copy this to your PC and then run the TUTILITY program. From the Table menu, select your GAGEpack database and then select the REBUILD option. The database will usually be found in a folder like this:

            C:\GP20\DATA\gages.db

If TUTILITY reports that it has found and corrected errors, go back and try the conversion again as described above. If you still encounter errors in step 2, the gages database from GAGEpack 2.0 is probably still corrupt. Another way to fix this corruption is to use Microsoft Access to manually edit the gages table. Follow these steps:

1)      Start Microsoft Access 97 or higher.

2)      Create a blank database.

3)      Under the File menu select the option Get External Data – Link tables

4)      When the file dialog box is displayed, change the drop down list at the bottom so you are browsing for Paradox files (*.db).

5)      Browse for and select your GAGEpack gages database – usually a file like this: C:\GP20\DATA\gages.db

6)      This will create a “table” in Access which is linked to the Paradox table.

7)      Open this table and browse through each record.

8)      Delete or correct any record that looks like it contains non-text characters.

9)      Delete any records that look like duplicates. No two records should have the same Gage Number.

10)  Delete any records that look like empty records. Be sure to scroll through the entire list to check and fix ALL the gage records which may be damaged.

11)  Close the table and exit from Microsoft Access

Now, try to do the conversion to GAGEpack 4.0 as described above. If you still encounter errors, contact PQ Systems Technical support at 800-777-5060 or 937-885-2255.

Note that GAGEpack 4.0 expects to find the complete folder structure for GAGEpack 2.0. If you have removed GAGEpack 2.0 and all you have is the data files, you may need to create this folder structure. This will fool the GAGEpack 4.0 conversion program into thinking GAGEpack 2.0 is still installed. Here are the folders you may need to create:

c:\GP20

c:\GP20\CL

c:\GP20\DATA            put your 2.0 data files here

c:\GP20\SYS\CFG

c:\GP20\USER

In the \GP20\SYS\CFG\ folder use NOTEPAD to create an empty file named: CONFIGS.CFG

Once your GAGEpack 2.0 data is converted into GAGEpack 4.0 format you are ready to use GAGEpack 5.5. Start GAGEpack 5.5 and select File/Open GAGEpack database. Browse for and select the GAGEpack 4.0 database. At this point, GAGEpack 5.5 will convert the GAGEpack 4.0 data and you are ready to begin using GAGEpack 5.5.

Please note that in GAGEpack 2.0 (DOS) there are multiple Paradox databases that contain your GAGEpack data. The bulk of your gage inventory data is stored in the file named Gages.db.
