Bytes and pieces:

  • Quality pioneer dies: Eiji Toyoda, who pioneered modern manufacturing techniques and promoted quality in Toyota automobiles, died September 17, at 100 years old. Copying the quality management techniques of Ford Motor Company, he brought continuous improvement based on W. Edwards Demings' principles to the Japanese automaker.
  • New source for oil? This amazing video demonstrates Japanese ingenuity in a process to convert plastics--containers, bags, and other forms--to a usable petroleum fuel.
