Quality Quiz:Professor Cleary
Another quiz from Professor Cleary

Congratulations: "D" is correct!

No one could be more eloquent than W. Edwards Deming, who pointed out that in his experience, factory workers the world over are interested in the quality of what they produce, not only because of “terror of losing [their] jobs,” but because workers want to have pride in their work.

Deming’s advice, as stated in his Fourteen Points for Management: “Remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right to pride of workmanship. The responsibility of supervisors must be changed from sheer numbers to quality” (Out of the Crisis, Cambridge, MA: MIT Center for Advanced Engineering Study, 1982, p. 24).

Deming attacks the emphasis on quantity, rather than quality. Though this may not be voiced, workers understand that their organization often wants more, rather than better. Incentive pay, Deming insists, exacerbates the problem, for when the rewards are for those who produce more, quality is diminished.

The entire system, from Justin Tyme’s finding cheap parts to the process of detecting rather than preventing errors, is responsible for the poor quality at Wright’s Write Manufacturing.

Let’s see how Deming himself talks about the hourly worker:
