Data in everyday life:
National Pi Day

This month we celebrate National Pi Day (March 14). Making pi chains has become a popular celebration of this holiday, with the record currently held by Masuk High School (Monroe, CT) whose students made a chain to represent 75,000 decimal places of pi. See this Pareto chart for other chain numbers. Send us a data source with your suggestion, and we'll show you how a CHARTrunner chart can clarify information.

Bytes and pieces:

  • New approach to eLine: Watch for new and improved eLine news as part of the PQ Systems blog. Have your say, and exchange ideas with others in this new format.
  • Technology in healthcare: The idea of a clinical visit in a "virtual world" populated by realistic computerized mannequins may seem farfetched, but this presentation at a HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) exhibit shows how avatars can support treatment plans.
  • Shoppers' cards and illness: Outbreaks of salmonella and other foodborne illnesses can be tracked in new technology of shoppers' loyalty cards.
