Justin appears to be oblivious to the multitude of problems that ensue when multiple suppliers are selected. Among these is the fact of variability among multiple suppliers for any single part. Each may be committed to reducing variability, but they may approach this reduction in different ways. Further, communications between the user company and its vendors will be compromised, in part because the three suppliers are placed in a position of competition, rather than cooperation to produce the best part. As W. Edwards Deming points out, it may take years to establish clear communication and verifiable outcomes with even one supplier; this process is complicated when more than one vendor has been selected.
