Quality Quiz:Professor Cleary
Another quiz from Professor Cleary

Justin Tyme is a manager responsible for ordering erasers to fit the mechanical pencils made by his company, Wright’s Write Right Manufacturing. The company’s president, Reed N.Wright, has the company’s products lined up neatly on his desk, and basks in the beauty of the mechanical pencils even though he rarely uses one. In arranging for the eraser part required to complete the pen’s manufacture, Justin prides himself on consulting a variety of supply lists representing products from eraser plants around the world--sharpening his pencil, so to speak, in order to find the best delivery time and price.

Justin writes specifications for the erasers to be purchased, and then sends these to ten potential suppliers, requesting bids to determine cost. He has decided to take the three lowest-cost eraser suppliers, so that if any of the selected suppliers fails in delivery promises, he can use the other two to make up shortages.

After selecting the three suppliers, Justin reports to Reed. “I have already developed a great relationship with these three eraser providers,” he says. “This way, I can get the best price, and they all compete with each other to get our business.” Reed N.Wright, looking up from the row of pencils he is lining up on his desk, responds, “Sounds good to me. Keep up the good work.” Pulling out his ballpoint pen, he writes a note to the purchasing department, authorizing Justin to continue to buy erasers for the company’s products.

Justin and Reed N. Wright have figured out a great way to save the company money on the eraser part they are responsible for. Is this true or not?

a) True

b) False
