While the name of Vilfredo Pareto, the Italian economist and sociologist, may not ring a bell in quite the same way that Enzo Ferrari’s name does, it is nonetheless true that Pareto’s contribution to data analysis may be commensurate to Ferrari’s impact on auto sports—at least in some circles.   • Open standards: Sun Microsystems has championed open communication protocol standards for manufacturing. Read more.
  • Healthcare quality: The 2007 National Healthcare Quality Report indicates that quality in healthcare improved by an average of 1.5 percent per year between 2000 and 2005—“not fast enough,” according to the report. Read more.
